Jeannette Walker Timko

Born June 3, 1932 in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio. She was the youngest and only daughter to Arthur Erwin Cooper Walker and Frances Elsie Shafer.

Description

Jeannette was average of build who stood about 5 foot 10 inch in height. She had dark brown hair, brown eyes and a slight Roman nose. It should be noted that she was very self-conscience of the shape of her nose, so much so that if her kids teasingly pushed down on her nose she would automatically push the tip of her nose up as if correcting the shape of her nose.

Early Years

Education

Jeannette graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in June of 1950 in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio. She loved high school and often commented that those were some of the best years of her life.

Religion

In her youth she was raised as a Methodist.

After her marriage to Edward John Timko she raised her children in the Catholic religion.

Military Service Years

Jeannette never served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Family Years

  • How they met - My mother loved to tell us kids how she met my dad Edward John Timko by writing letters to him during the end of WWII. As she told it, my dad’s sister Dorothy was good friends with mother because they went to the same high school. Somehow Dorothy must have told my mom about her brother being stationed at Lackland AFB. Now, during the war, people were constantly encourage to support “our boys over seas.”  And one of the ways suggested was to write to the troops, you know, become a penpal. Dorothy must have told my mom about her brother because Jeannette began writing to him. My dad was a bit surprised when he received the first letter but it soon grew into something that they each enjoyed as the frequency and length of the letters grew over time. (I know this to be true because my mother kept all my dad’s letters to her.) Eventually, they arranged to meet when my dad was home on leave, and, well as they say, the rest is history.

  • Lived at 4419 Kincaid East Road in Champion, Trumbull County, Ohio for the remainder of her life.

Working Years

She was a homemaker for sixty years.

After her graduation she worked at Trumbull Saving and Loan in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio until she reached her seventh month of her first pregnancy. (She worked there about two years.)

At age 16, she worked for at time at Farr Clothing after school. (Her mother cried when she learned her only daughter had started working.)

Personal Life

She enjoyed crocheting.

On a more personal note, Jeannette suffered from depression for most of her life. In 1966, her mother Frances Elsie Shafer died of a heart attack and my mother never fully recovered from her loss. She sunk into a deep depression that last for years, and the loss of her brother Richard Arthur Walker eight years later only deepened this depression. It was believed that the loss of both her mother and brother was the reason behind her depression. However, in later years her oldest son learned that she had previously suffered from panic attacks and the deaths of her mother and brother only added to her suffering. Unfortunately, mental health issues were, and continued to be, something not discussed openly. This stigma only added to her suffering.

Death

Jeannette died from a stroke on January 16, 2012 at Hospice House in Poland Mahoning County, Ohio.

She was buried on January 19, 2012 at Champion Township Cemetery in Champion, Trumbull County, Ohio. This cemetery is located on Center Street (Rt 305) in Champion, Trumbull County, Ohio. This cemetery is approximately 7 miles northwest of Warren, Ohio.
