Frances Elsie (Shafer) Walker

Born on August 17, 1901 in Champion Township, Trumbull County, Ohio. She was the oldest child and daughter of Charles Judson Shafer and Maude Irene Weiss.

Frances was average of build who stood about 5 foot 8 inch in height. She had dark brown hair and hazel eyes. In her later years, Frances' hair turned white but she dyed it with some coloring that gave her hair a slight bluish tint.

Early Years

  • Childhood - She was born and grew up on the family farm in Champion, Trumbull County, Ohio. Prior to her birth, her mother gave birth to a pair of twin boys who died at birth. During her early school years, Frances became ill with typhoid fever. It was believed she became ill because the water from the school was contaminated.
  • Early Loss - In her later years, an early boyfriend of hers, Lee Cathouse, died in her arms from Bright's disease.

She graduated from Champion High School (Valedictorian) on April 22, 1921 in Champion Township, Trumbull County, Ohio.[1]

Family Years

  • How they met - Met Arthur at a dance, dating with her sisters Agnes (with Morley Patterson) and Marion (with Arthur’s brother, Robert)
  • First house - The first house the couple ever owned was at 1454 McMyler Street NW in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio.
  • Marriage - Frances married Arthur Erwin Cooper Walker on June 10, 1926 in Champion Township, Trumbull County, Ohio. The couple had two children: one boy - Richard Arthur Walker, and one girl - Jeannette Frances. (Note: Frances did, however, have a miscarriage a few years after the birth of her daughter Jeannette. Jeannette remembers the doctor coming to the house and later leaving with a "wrapped bundle" in his arms.)

Frances was a housewife for forty years.

Early in life she did clerical work at Ohio Lamp in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio.

Personal Life

She loved playing cards (500) with a few of her close friends. The club was originally called the "Merry Ole Girls," but was later renamed "Grandmas' Card Club.

Frances also loved to tend to her flowers, loved to sew, knit and crochet, and playing her organ.

Death

Frances died from a heart attack (a circulatory collapse due to coronary arterial occlusion) on December 15, 1966 at her home in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio. Her husband Arthur discovered her body.

She was buried on December 19, 1966 at Champion Township Cemetery in Champion, Trumbull County, Ohio. This cemetery is located on Center Street (Rt 305) in Champion, Trumbull County, Ohio. This cemetery is approximately 7 miles northwest of Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio.
