Born January 12, 1921 in Beatty, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was the eighth oldest child of the ten children of John George Petiya and his wife Anna Kolcum
Description
Paul, or Paulie as he was known, was of a heavy build (weighing 224 lbs in 1942) and average of stature (5 foot 10 inch). He had a light complexion with freckles along with sandy-colored hair and brown eyes.
Early Years
- Childhood - Paul had six brothers, Stephen, John R., Joseph Peter, Frank Joseph, Andrew Steve and Thomas Frank, and three sisters, Anna, Helen Barbara and Pauline. The family moved to Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio in 1942.

Paul completed the fifth grade in Warren City Schools in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio.

Baptized into the Catholic faith.
Military Service Years
Private Paul Steve Petiya served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enlisted on 13 Nov 1942 at Camp Blanding in Florida and was discharged in July of 1943.. He served in the 361st Infantry during the war.
