Mary Martha (Timko) Petrilla

Mary was born on December 6, 1915 in Dixonville, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. She was the oldest of the ten children born to Joseph John Timko Sr. and Anna Veronica Berish.

Description

Mary was of average build (weighed 150 pounds in 1943) and stood about 5 foot 6 inches in height. She had brown hair and brown eyes.

Early Years

Having 8 younger brothers and sisters, Mary spent much of her youth assisting her mother Anna in raising her siblings.

• Childhood - Mary was born and grew up in the coal-mining communities that made up central Indiana County, Pennsylvania. In 1928, at the age of 13 years old, she and her family moved to Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio.

Mary's formal education was completed by the ninth grade.

Religion

Mary was baptized into the Catholic faith on December 8, 1915 in Clymer, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.

She was a member of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio and a charter member of the C&M Ladies Guild of the church.

Military Service Years

Mary never served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Married Andrew Michael Petrilla on November 23, 1933 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio. The officiant was Reverend John M. Kandrac. The couple had three children: two boys - Paul Albert and John David and one girl - Elizabeth Jane.

The couple would have eventually have three children;

During the Mary's years in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio, she lived with her family in a total of ten houses, rented or owned, on the southwest side of the city.

• Lived at 1xx Parkman Road [Note: The exact address of the family's first rental house is not known. My paternal Aunt Emma (Timko) Burin said that while driving with her mother Anna, Anna pointed to a small collection of houses next to the railroad tracks on Parkman and said that was the house the family lived in when they first arrived in the city. At the time, it never occurred to Emma to ask exactly which of the houses had been the family's first home. However, from city records, the address would have to have been either 160, 170 or 178 Parkman Road, hence the 1xx designation.]

• Lived at 1437 Tod Avenue SW in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio.

Working Years

• Prior to her moving to Ohio, Mary worked in the laundry at the Indiana State Normal School which later became Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Given that the family moved to Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio in 1928, Mary would have been about 13 years old while she worked in the laundry.
• She was a homemaker for 48 years until her untimely death.
• Previously, she worked at the Royal Bakery on W. Market Street across from Rowland's Grocery. Mary would bring home Brownie "ends," leftover creme puffs or any broken pies. Her family never knew what type of desert they would be served each evening. She also worked part-time for a florist on E. Market Street by the tracks near the hospital.
• Before her marriage Mary worked as a waitress (1930), and then later she worked as a grocery clerk for R.C. Knox on the corner of Parkman Road and Oak Street in 1932.

Personal Life

Mary loved to can vegetables from her garden and was active in the Tuesday Senior Ladies Bowling League.

She was also a member of the ladies guild at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church and a blood donor for the American Red Cross (Gallon-Club donor).

Death

Mary died from diffuse metastatic carcinomatosis due to carcinoma of the ovaries (ovarian cancer) on Saturday, February 14, 1981, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio.

She was buried on February 16, 1981 at All Souls Cemetery in Cortland, Trumbull County, Ohio. All Souls Cemetery is located on Hoagland-Blackstub Road, 1 mile north of SR 305 in Cortland, Trumbull County, Ohio. This cemetery is approximately 7-8 miles north of Warren.
