Emil and Emma (Berish) Galetka

Born on September 8, 1922 in. Aultman, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. She was the thirteenth child of Michael Berish and Anna P. Mudry.

Description

Emma who stood about 5 foot 6 inches tall was of average build. She had brown eyes and brown hair.

Early Years

Education

Emma completed a few years of high school at Warren G. Harding High School in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio.

Religion

She was baptized into the Catholic faith on September 10, 1922. As she was a change-of-life baby, she was small and frail so they decided to baptize early. Her mother told her that when she was born, they put her in a shoebox next to the stove to keep her warm. (Her husband Emil used to joke with her and ask, "Are you sure they didn't put you IN the oven?")

She was a member of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Roman Catholic Parish in Indiana since 1947.

Family Years

Married Emil James Galetka on April 14, 1944 at Holy Trinity Church by Robert B. Kealey in Norfolk, Virginia.

Residences

Working Years

She was a homemaker and she worked at Days Dry Cleaners in Oceanview, VA and was an employee of Indiana State Teachers College, working and living in John Sutton Hall in the 1940s.

Personal Life

She could frequently be found sitting on her front porch, where she loved to converse with neighbors. As a homemaker, Emma was known for her healthy vegetable crops, berries, fruits and flowers. She loved to cook, make jams and jellies, and bake. She especially enjoyed visits with family and friends, old photographs, picnics in the yard and camping in State Parks. She was well-read and always informed of current events. She had a good sense of humor, was creative and was known for her cheerful laugh.

Death

Emma died from sepsis on August 23, 2015 at Indiana Regional Medical Center in Indiana, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.

She was buried on August 25, 2015 at St. Bernard's Cemetery in Indiana, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Her grave is located in St. Bernard Cemetery which is located on 200 Clairvaux Drive, about one and half miles northeast of Indiana, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.
