Born November 29, 1916 in Beatty, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was the sixth oldest child of the ten children of John George Petiya and his wife Anna Kolcum.

Andrew, or Andy as he was known, was of average build (weighing 159 lbs in 1940) and short of stature (5 foot 10 1/2 inch). He had a light complexion along with brown hair and blue eyes. In

T/Sgt Andrew Steve Petiya served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enlisted on on April 19, 1941 at Fort Hayes in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. He served in the European Theatre of Operations during the war.
