Born November 3, 1914 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was the fifth oldest child of the ten children of John George Petiya and his wife Anna Kolcum.

Description

Frank was of average build (weighing 165 lbs in 1940) and short of stature (5 foot 5 1/2 inch). He had a ruddy complexion along with brown hair and brown eyes. In his later years he had number 2-3-4 fingers of right hand partially cut off.

He also had the dubious nickname of Fats.

Joseph completed the ninth grade.

Religion

Baptized into the Catholic faith.

He was a member of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio.

Military Service Years

Frank served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enlisted on December 3, 1942 and was discharged on February 6 1946.

Married Dorothy Medar on January 22, 1944. The couple had three children, two sons - Frank Joseph Jr. and Joseph F. and one girl - Janet Lee.

Frank was an avid gardener and traveler. He also enjoyed football.

He also was a member of the First Catholic Slovak Men’s Union

Death

Frank passed away from a cardiac arrest on May 30, 1985 at St. Joseph Riverside Hospital in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio.

He is buried on June 1, 1985 at All Souls Cemetery in Cortland, Trumbull County, Ohio. The grave of Frank is located in All Souls Cemetery on Hoagland-Blackstub Road, one mile north of SR 305 in Cortland, Trumbull County, Ohio. This cemetery is approximately 7-8 miles north of Warren, Ohio.
