Andrew Michael Petrilla

Born November 30, 1907 in Homer City, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. He was the third oldest child of ten children born to Johan Petrilla and Juliana Alice Minarcik.

Description

Andrew, or Andy as he was known, was of average build who stood about 5 foot 5 1/2 inches in height. He had wavy, brown hair and blue eyes. He was known to smoke a pipe in later years.

Education

Andy's formal education was completed by the eight grade.

Religion

Andy was baptized into the Catholic faith. After his marriage he became a member of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio.

Work Project Administration (WPA) Projects

Andy worked for a time on a WPA project. [Note: Location and timeframe unknown per his oldest child Betty Jane.]

Military Service Years

Andy was exempted from military service due to his working in the steel industry which was vital to the war effort.

Married Mary Martha Timko November 23, 1933 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio. The couple had three children: two boys - Paul Albert and John David and one girl - Elizabeth Jane.

During his early years in Indiana County, Pennsylvania he:

  • Lived in Banks Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania in 1910.
  • Lived in Boardman Town in Knox Township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania in 1920.

During the Andrew's years in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio, he lived with his family in a total of six houses, rented or owned, on the southwest side of the city.

  • Lived at 755 Fourth Street in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio in 1930.
  • Lived on Hunter Street in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio in 1933. This was the address given to the hospital when their first child Betty Jane was born.
  • Lived on Maple Street in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio in 1935. This was the family address when their son Paul Albert was born.
  • Lived at 978 Palmyra Road SW in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio in1935.
  • Lived at 815 Fifth Street in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio in1940.
  • Lived at 1453 Oak Street SW in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio in 1954.
  • Lived at 2488 Bazetta Road NE in Cortland, Trumbull County, Ohio in 1980.

Working Years

Employed as a slitter operator at Brainard Steel Division, Sharon Steel Corporation. He retired from Brainard Steel after working there for 35 years in 1970.

While at Brainard Steel Division, he assisted his brother-in-law Edward John Timko to gain employment there.

Previously to his employment at Brainard Steel Division, he worked at Thomas Steel Corporation on McMyler Street SW in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio in 1935.

Prior to his position at Thomas Steel Corporation, he, along with his younger brother Joseph George Petrilla, worked for a time at a local florist shop.

Personal Life

He loved woodworking, gardening and fishing.

Death

Andy died from a heart attack on August 12, 1996 on Monday at 11:45 a.m at the Glenview Manor Nursing Home in Mineral Ridge, Trumbull County, Ohio.

He was buried on August 14, 1996 at All Souls Cemetery in Cortland, Trumbull County, Ohio. All Souls Cemetery is located on Hoagland-Blackstub Road, 1 mile north of SR 305 in Cortland, Ohio., Trumbull County, Ohio. This cemetery is approximately 7-8 miles north of Warren, Ohio. Their graves can be found in Section 1, Lot 3509, with Grave 3 being that of Andrew’s.
