Born John Biroš on December 14,1901 in Barnesboro, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. He was born at home and was the third oldest child born to Michael Berish and Anna P. Mudry.

Description

He was of average build and stature (5 foot 8 3/4 inch). He was clean shaven. He wore his brown hair in a crewcut. He had brown eyes that could be found behind eye glasses that he wore most of his life.

He completed the eighth grade.

Religion

John was baptized into the Catholic faith on December 22, 1901 in Spangler, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. He was baptized at Holy Cross Church by Rev. Tragler. Stephen Kouty and Mary Vargo were is sponsors.

He was a member of St. Bernards Church in Indiana, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.

Military Service Years

Cpl John Paul Berish served in the U.S. Army during peacetime. Began serving on May 14, 1925 and was discharged on April 12, 1927. He served 3 years and 1 day.

Family Years

Married Mary Elizabeth Setlock on February 7, 1930 at Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, OH. The couple had two children: one boy - John Michael, and one girl - Mary Catherine.

Death

John died from cardiac arrest resulting from a stroke on September 18, 1988 at Indiana Hospital in Indiana, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.

He was buried on September 20, 1988 at Oakland Cemetery in Indiana, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. The graves of Mary and John are located in Oakland Cemetery on 845 Rose Street  in Indiana, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. This cemetery is approximately 7 miles southwest of they city. Their graves can be found in Section L, Lot 115, Graves 1 (John) and 2 (Mary).
