Born on August 22, 1915 in Heilwood, Indiana County,  Pennsylvania. He was the second oldest child of John Fancella and Mary Frances Mela.

Joseph attended school until age 13 when he quit to work in the mines.

While Joseph was baptized into the Catholic faith.

He was a member of the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church of Seward, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

Married Anna Mae Timko in or about 1939. The couple had four children: three boys - Joseph S. Jr., Michael Don and Robert Mark and one girl - Joanna.

Owner of the Arco Station in Armagh, Indiana County, Pennsylvania for 35 years and also worked for R&P Coal company for 34 years. Early in career, he was employed as a mechanic for Harris Boyer and Bonarrigo Ford and also as a tire recapper for Campbell Tire.

Death

Joseph died from black lung on April 3, 1998 at the Laurel Wood Convalescent Center in Johnstown, Indiana Co, PA He was buried on April 7 1998 at St. Bernard's Cemetery in Inidiana County, Pennsylvania.
