Military Service Years

Pfc Michael Joseph Politsky served in the U.S. Army. Began serving on 14 Sep 1943 (Fort Hayes) and was discharged on 1 Jan 1946 (Camp Atterbury, IN). He served as a cook in Company D, 1308th Engineers under General George Patton. Fought in Northern France, Ardennes and Rhineland. He was awarded EAME Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, 3 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Ribbon and WWII Victory Medal.

Michael commented one time that when her served under General Patton, the General ordered all personnel to wear "leggings," even the cooks. This order did not exactly endear Patton to the cooking staff after that order was given. [Note: Leggings were made of canvas and worn atop the upper portion of the military boots. They were supposed to protect the lower leg, to keep dirt, sand, and mud from entering their shoes, and to provide a measure of ankle support. They were eventually eliminated from a soldier's required military gear.]
