Born on August 9, 1943 in Kettering, Montgomery County, Ohio. He was one of four children, and the only son, of Francis Scott Laughlin and Gertrude Maribee Ogg.

David married his high school sweetheart, Sharon. The couple had one child, Erica. They later divorced.

David died on June 11, 2015.
