Married Joann Barker on February 11, 1961 in Sacramento, Sacramento County, California. The couple had four children, three boys, Leo, Jeffrey and Nicholas, and one girl, Diane. The couple divorced. Herbert later married Dorothy Alice Timko on July 7, 2008 in Douglas County, Oregon. The couple had no children.

Leo died died in his sleep at the age of 78 years on May 26. 2014 in Mill Hall, Clinton County, Pennsylvania. He was buried at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Sacramento, Sacramento County, California.
