Robert was born on July 18, 1928 in East Liverpool, Columbiana County, Ohio. He was the only child to William Roy Swickard and Lavina Jean Cooper.

He worked 16 hours a day for 35 years. Ohio Edison on day turn and then he worked a steam shovel in the strip mines at night. His kids almost never saw him growing up. In addition, he sometimes pumped gas too on the weekend.
