+* '''Childhood -''' Ed's family split up when he was very little.  Life was tough in the U.S. in 1929 and the following years weren't much better.  When Ed was 2 years old his mother left Warren, Ohio and her family to move to New York to find work.  Since Ed's father had to work also, he had to decide what to do with the children.  Ed's sister Elma was sent to her mother, now working in New York.  Ed, himself, was fostered to another family in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio, the Lustila family.  Matti and Saima Lustila, with their children Ero, Ida, Olga and Lillian, raised Ed.  Having come from Finland, also and speaking very little English, this family took in Ed and raised him like their own.  Ed said that Matti and Saima were here in the U. S. around 1903 but returned to Finland about 1907 taking their son Ero with them.  They returned to the US in 1909.  Matti came in Feb of 1909 aboard the Teutonic.  Saima came back in October of 1909 bringing Ero and a baby, John, aboard the Oceanic.  They lived in Pennsylvania where Matti worked as a coal miner.  The family later moved back to Warren.  Both Matti (1956) and Saima (about 1962) died in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio and are buried at Pineview Cemetery on Route 42.
