Born on July 9, 1871 in Mecca Township, Trumbull County, Ohio. He was the fourth oldest child of Jeremiah Shafer and Susanna Fenstermaker.

Judson, as he was known, was lean in build and tall in stature. His hair turned pure white while he was middle aged.

Judson died from a coronary embolism on February 3, 1948 in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio. He died of a heart attack on the sidewalk in front of the Court House Annex on Mahoning NW in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio while walking north at about 4 pm city police reported. He was found by Dr. R. L. Thomas, of Kinsman, who summoned Hall’s ambulance

Hw was buried on February 6, 1948 at Champion Township Cemetery in Champion, Trumbull County, Ohio. This cemetery is located on Center Street (Rt 305) in Champion, Trumbull County, Ohio. This cemetery is approximately 7 miles northwest of Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio.
